Edge of Tomorrow
Edge Of Tomorrow might just be the best videogame movie ever made.
Sure, it's not based on any existing console franchise but neither were Wreck-It Ralph or Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and this sits alongside those heavyweights with the actual game-based films like Resident Evil and Tomb Raider languishing behind.
Sure, the 'Groundhog Day' premise isn't original and neither is the alien invasion/mech'-suit war but this has a sense of joy and fun rarely seen in big blockbuster action films.
Tom Cruise is excellent here and injects humour and vulnerability into the role (it's nice that he doesn't start the film as a super-soldier action hero but a army logistics PR man with no intention of ever seeing a battle).
The journey he takes living the same day over and over actually feels correct and proper (no rushed learning curve here) and the plot stays firmly the right side of making sense.
Sure, there are always going to be questions raised (just what are those weird alien things?! They're easily the worst thing about the entire film) and how come sometimes Emily Blunt's character has loads of plans written down when the day is restarted and sometimes not) but this is in with a shout of being the action film of the year.
A massively pleasant surprise and a brilliant watch.
