Goosebumps
They don't make films like Goosebumps anymore. Tapping into the 80's and 90's family-movie zeitgeist this is a delightful throwback to classics like Ghostbusters, The Goonies and Jumanji.
If this was released anytime other than this year we would be holding this up as a classic of the genre and watch it every bank holiday.
Zippy, inventive and fun this is the story of boy meets girl whilst running away from the monstrous creations of RL Stine's titular series of novels.
The fun is kept up throughout and all the performances are on-point, the hallmark tropes are there (the climactic scene obviously takes place in a high-school) and the key plot developments are all satisfying.
Jack Black isn't as brilliantly maniacal as usual but plays perfectly reserved as Stine himself (although he gets to let loose a little more voicing the brilliant Slappy the talking dummy) and the younger actors aren't annoying which is key.
Brilliant fun and well worth a watch.
