The Equalizer 3

You might be surprised at how much time you’ll spend in The Equalizer 3 watching Denzel Washington’s Robert McCall drink tea in a Sicilian café and doing chores for the locals.

Don’t worry though, he still gets his fair amount of ‘equalizing’ to do but this entry is more about the philosophical elements around the ‘why’ aspect.

The second instalment was Washington’s first ever sequel and you get the impression that he wanted to end the trilogy properly and put care and attention into how to best do this. The result is a film that easily bests its predecessor, which just felt a little scattershot, but doesn’t quite match the brutal and ruthless efficiency of the tight original.

Washington just exudes star quality and once again holds the entire film together with just the slightest flicker of a smile or a great line delivery. The action sequences are again suitably pulse-raising despite the lack of stakes (you know he’s going to win but still care about how he does it.)

Matched by a desperately pretty location and a logical story (albeit one without a totally riveting villain) this is a solid final entry in a solid action series.
