It’d be fantastic if the awards buzz and critical hype surrounding Parasite got people into the cinema and watching a foreign language film.
The tired rhetoric of ‘not wanting to read subtitles’ means so many miss out on incredible movies and whilst some remakes are good (Let Me In, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - not as good as the originals though) the less said about anything dubbed into English the better.
Parasite would be a great place to start for the uninitiated as well - twisting, surprising, engaging and accessible in equal measure.
What starts as a fairly comedic study of a poor family in Korea slowly descends into a psychological thriller that’s impossible to predict.
It comes from the genius mind of Bong Joon-ho who has made exceptional comments on class already with the future-set Okja and Snowpiercer (both severely under-seen and both available on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video respectively) but tops both here with this twisted and beguiling film.
For fear of giving more away no more discussion of plot but what a haunting delight this film is. It’ll infest you and won’t let go. Parasite is an apt title.
