After Serbia’s delightful Flow stole hearts and minds last year in the animation world, this year it is the turn of France with the absolutely gorgeous Arco.

This could easily be the best animated movie of the year and even one of the best films full stop.

A Ghibli-esque science fiction allegory about two different apocalyptic futures, and two youngsters who fatefully meet when one travels back in time.

The imagery is incredibly imaginative, instantly iconic and altogether beautiful.

The story gently riffs on the all timers of the genre (E.T., Interstellar etc) whilst being very much its own beast and, whilst it is gentle and touching, it is also propulsive, engaging and features some excellent little twists and turns.

To say more would be to ruin the experience but, much like Flow before it, this is an easy recommendation for anyone. Even if you’re not interested in anime this is touching, stunning, thought-provoking and delightful.
