The Brighton Film Club's Films of the Year 2021

Updated: Nov 17, 2022

In some ways, it's wrong to be grateful for the sheer amount of movies released this year. Last year's delays and cancellations because of the pandemic have had many consequences and will continue to be felt into next year with the MCU's planned releases being rescheduled as one prominent example.

Having said that though, the quality of those films which have finally been released this year have driven people back into cinemas and it's with absolute delight that we're able to publish a films of the year list with so many theatrical releases in there after the fears of last year that cinemas may become obsolete.

Of course, the streaming sites have waded in with heavy hitters of their own, and it's still surprising to us how quickly some films are slipping onto Disney+, but it feels like a much more stable and successful year and an awesome one to look back on. Here then, after the customary squabbles and more shuffles than a Vegas casino, is The Brighton Film Club’s Films of the Year 2021:

30. Barb & Star Go To Vista del Mar

29. Cruella

28. The Map of Tiny Perfect Things

27. Army of the Dead

26. Respect

25. The Suicide Squad

24. No Time To Die

23. Black Widow

22. Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings

21. Petite Maman

20. Eternals 19. The Last Duel 18. Last Night In Soho 17. C'mon C'mon 16. Minari 15. Another Round 14. In The Heights 13. One Night In Miami... 12. Sound of Metal 11. The Father 10. The Mitchells vs. The Machines 9. I Care A Lot 8. Palm Springs 7. Spencer 6. Judas & The Black Messiah 5. Malcolm & Marie 4. Nomadland 3. Dune 2. Promising Young Woman 1. Spider-Man: No Way Home

It's been such a good year that this list could even be extended (Songbird, Moxie, King Richard, Creation Stories, Finch, Jungle Cruise and Gunpowder Milkshake are solid extra viewing if you've gone through the above) and there's also a handful we have shamefully not had the chance to catch in time to make the list (Cherry, The French Dispatch, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Luca, Encanto, The Green Knight, The Power Of The Dog, Black Bear, Shiva Baby, West Side Story, The Kings Man and The Matrix: Resurrections to name a few!)
