Theater Camp

It’s not often you see the 'mockumentary' format but it tends to always be something worth seeing when it does appear.

From This Is Spinal Tap through to The Office, What We Do In The Shadows et al, the format allows for brilliant, quotable comedy that’s usually smart and rewards repeat viewing.

The latest example is the excellent Theater Camp which doesn’t really require a description, it does exactly what it says on the tin.

This is no straight pastiche mocking tale though. Stuffed with theatre talent this film tows the line between gags on this ‘all American, theatre kid’ type of thing but also highlighting just how important these experiences are for most of those who attend as well as showing some serious musical theatre chops.

Sure enough, this fake preparation for a musical at the end of camp leaves off with a performance of the piece which might just make you sit up a little in your seat. The jokes are still there but you get a full circle realisation of what the filmmakers were trying to achieve.

It’s very funny, strikingly original (whilst also warmly familiar) and will reward rewatching. Top notch comedy.
